  7.     LETTER DROP is the computerized
  8. version of a familiar matrix type
  9. puzzle regularly found in most paper
  10. and pencil puzzle magazines. From top
  11. to bottom, the screen consists of:
  12. the letter storage area, puzzle
  13. matrix, and command/dialogue area.
  14.  
  15.     Begin by selecting LOAD, choose a
  16. drive, and decide which puzzle you
  17. would like to solve. The puzzles are
  18. quotations that are more or less
  19. memorable. Most of them came from Jon
  20. Winokur's THE PORTABLE CURMUDGEON,
  21. New American Library, 1987.
  22.  
  23.     With a puzzle in place, you will
  24. notice columns of letters in the
  25. storage area. The letters in each
  26. column fit a box directly below to
  27. form words. The order of the stored
  28. letters may or may not correspond to
  29. the correct boxes. Blank squares
  30. indicate the end of words.
  31.  
  32.     Using either the cursor keys or
  33. the joystick in port 2, move the
  34. cursor over any letter in the storage
  35. area. Press RETURN or FIRE to pick up
  36. the letter, then move down to an empty
  37. box and press RETURN or FIRE again to
  38. drop the letter.  You will find that
  39. the empty cursor will move freely in
  40. all four directions, but will not
  41. leave the column when it carries a
  42. letter.

  44.     If you really get stuck, move the
  45. empty cursor over any empty box and
  46. press <H> for a letter hint. Provided
  47. the correct letter is in storage, it
  48. is placed in the box under the
  49. cursor. If nothing happens, one or
  50. more of the letters placed in that
  51. column is incorrect. Move a letter
  52. back to the storage area and request
  53. the hint again.

  55.     Should the situation become
  56. hopeless you can request the complete
  57. solution by pressing <S>.
  58.  
  59.     The "hot" keys are printed in
  60. white in the command area so you can
  61. always tell what keys to press.
